by: Kyle Farnsworth
Current, clever, calculated writing in a very present conversational format. I felt like the author was with me, telling me this gripping story.
There is a lot of thought, literary knowledge and real-life experience poured into the pages of this book. Whalers also tells the side bar story of a city, from its glory days when money and business boomed from the whaling industry, sliding down over time through the mill era to its current day city of survival.
Set part of the time in a public school, Whalers explores issues with public education with a city population struggling and social system infrastructure failing to serve some students. Farnsworth’s focus on the needs of students’ v/s cookie cutter education on a tight budget highlights the wins and losses of the present systems. Ultimately the view of the school story is who get swallowed up by the system and who pays the price.
The main character is on a gritty journey you won’t want to miss! I highly recommend this book!
