Snow in August Book Review
I just discovered Snow in August by author Pete Hamill. What a powerhouse of a story. I was swept back in time and walked the streets of Brooklyn, New York with the characters. The deep research and character development brought such realism to the events. Although the book published in 1997 looks back to 1947, it is a timeless struggle still evident in the world today. The book has a thread that enlightens the power in education and the opportunity in learning. I found this such an important piece of the story; it is through teaching and learning that the boy Michael finds himself and deals with the struggle that is post-war Brooklyn. 1947 was the year Jackie Robinson made history as the first black pro-baseball player. His story inspires young Irish-American Michael and all of New York, throughout the book.
